When it comes down to designing a website or running an online business there's one thing that will make a huge difference in the success of your website. It's not fancy graphics and it's not slick designs (although they do matter). One of the most single most important aspects of having an online presence is having a reliable web hosting company that you can trust to keep your domain and website online.
Nobody ever wants to spend more money than they need to and this is doubly true of web hosting. You'd be amazed to see how much the price and quality varies from one web host to another. Many people believe that you need to pay top dollar to get great web hosting. Now this might have been true in the late 90's but times have changed. It's now possible to get cheap website hosting that offers great support. What might have once cost you $50 or $60 per month is available for far less than that and with lots more features. The consumer now has more power than you've ever had before.
So what are the key things you need to look for in a great web host?
Uptime
This is the amount of time your site will be live and online. Now in an ideal world this would be 100%. The reality is that 99% uptime is as much as you can hope for and most web hosting companies advertize their uptime as 99% or higer. Web servers break down folks so this is why 99% is as good as it gets.
Support
When you have a website (or a few websites) online things will go wrong. When this happens you're going to need a web hosting company that offers 24/7 support. The fact they offer 24/7 support is one thing but the quality of the support is even more important. There's no point in talking to a web tech support guy who doesn't know his FTP from his HTTP. You need your problems fixed quickly and correctly - otherwise you'll go nuts.
Cpanel
This is a standard user interface I expect to see web hosting companies using. It's pretty much industry standard at this stage. It gives you direct control over all aspects of your web hosting account in a nice Windows-style interface. It makes technical tasks very easy so I'd recommend only using web hosts that use Cpanel.
Bandwidth
This simply means how much information can be downloaded from your website each month. This information is made up of the text, pictures, videos or anything else that you might store online. When your website starts off first your bandwidth needs will probably be pretty small. But as your website gets more popular you're going to need more bandwidth to keep it online. Just focus on this with bandwidth - more is always better.
Disk space
Every page of text, every picture, video or mp3 that you put online will need a certain amount of disk space - just like your home computer does. The vast, vast majority of websites won't use more than 100MB (megabytes) of storage space. Unless you're putting a lot of high resoltion pictures or videos online then disk space is not something you'll need an awful lot of.
Unlimited domains
This is a standard feature for most reliable web hosting accounts now. Even if you only need to host one domain right now it won't do any harm to have the ability to add more domains if you want to later on.
